Gateway to Honors Mini-Experience
One of my primary interests has always been filmmaking and video production. So for my mini-experience, my creativity themed group went to Langsam Library’s Student Technology Resource Center (STRC) and learned about and used the green screen room and editing suite. We learned the logistics of reserving both the rooms and equipment such as cameras, tripods, and microphones from the front desk. We also looked at and used the programs available in the editing room.

This is all very interesting to me because I want to work on my own video projects outside of class with all of the assets UC has to offer. I have known about the STRC for some time now and wanted to learn the logistics around its use. Now that I have, I will be able to use it quickly and easily for future project. I also saw many programs I could use there and not pay for. This will allow me to use them without having to buy them myself. It also gives me the opportunity to practice new skills, in combination with our academic resource, adobe learn.

All of this contributes to the Creative Thematic area: “Explore a new creative competency/medium or seek new ways to engage an existing competency/medium.” I have found a way to explore new video production programs through the access that the STRC and improve my skills in areas like green screening with the STRC’s green screen room. I hope that these new skills will allow me to improve my overall video production capabilities.

Now that I have completed this experience, I hope to combine the skills I will be learning with other areas. For example, a video project is a team effort and I will need to be able to communicate an overview of my competency in color keying or video editing so that the director knows what I will and will not be able to accomplish. These newfound skills also will allow me to know when I am director what ideas are plausible and what are not. This mini-experience has allowed me to improve my overall production skills and given me a great start to utilizing campus resources.
Final Reflection
When asked what it means to be a Global Citizens Scholar, there are many possible answers. But in the context of my life and Gateway to Honors, I would say that it means to be ever learning and using your knowledge to make the world a better place. To be a scholar means that you are continuing to broaden your skills and ideas. To be a Global Citizen means to consider the broader context of your surroundings. Be that your community, country, planet, galaxy, or time-space dimension of the universe. A Global Citizen Scholar takes these to aspects and combines them. He or she broadens their abilities by and to make the world a better place. I am and will be searching for ways to do that with both my passions in Film Production and Electrical Engineering.
