Werner Herzog Reflection
While not I do not agree with all of Werner Herzog's ideas, or at least all of his implementations of them, this spoke as most truthful to me. I do not feel that film school is quite as useless as he says it is. It gives you connections and experience that would be more difficult to find other ways. However, I think that the core of his statement is true. Life experience is what makes a great filmmaker, not knowledge of equipment.
I definitely agree with the idea that traveling two thousand miles on foot and reflecting on that experience on the way would prepare you more as a filmmaker than going to film school. While film school is very good at preparing technical knowledge, I think that having a wealth of life experience to shape your world view is what is important. It's important to you as a person and as a filmmaker. What better way to prepare you to make art about the world in a meaningful way than to experience the world itself?
