Dangerous Curves Reflection

Dangerous Curves focused around Roz Mays, who deals with her weight and body image through pole dancing. While it focused on her, we got to see brief glimpses into her family, mainly her mother, and some of the people she affected. This worked well for a documentary mainly centered around one person and her struggle. It brought light to her journey but also expanded to how that journey impacted others.

The filming took place in a gym, a photography studio, her home, and a theater performance. All were fairly simple and very relevant to the story. They all were important parts of Roz's story; the practice that goes into her work, the performance that goes out into the world, how her work affects her relationship with her family.

Most of the B-roll centered around her performing. A lot of close ups were given to the parts of her body during the dance. This brought us in more to her world and accentuated the parts of her that seem to clash with society. One part also showed various public opinion of her through youtube comments. All very strong representations of her inner demons.

Overall, I believe the director wanted to show the audience how hard being in a minority can be and how some people cope with some of those difficulties. Whether that minority be from race, gender, or body image. Because of the ending, I also believe the director wanted the audience to come away feeling stronger and more inspired to cope with their own personal struggles.
