Production Journal
Authorship :: What role will you as the creator play in the video. Will you narrate, ask questions from behind the camera, be a character in the video, remove your presence from video, or a combination of the former options? How does this method help the message of your project?
I want to focus the project on the drones, how they operate, and what it is like to fly them. I don't want to be in the film at all because I feel my presence as an outsider will not add much to the story. I don't have much experience that can add to the overall film.
Content/ Interview Questions :: Make a list of no less than 5 interview questions for each interviewee. As you create the questions think about the relationship between what you to include in the film and what questions might generate that material.
1) What is the ultimate goal with flying these drones? What are you hoping to accomplish or get to ultimately?
2) what was your first ever exposure to drones and how has your understanding of them evolved?
3) What is your worst experience with a drone?
4) What is your best experience with a drone?
5) As you are kind of starting out in this area, what is the biggest way your understanding of the field has shifted?
6) Have you had any mentors in the area?
7) Do you have any major fears associated with flying drones?
8) How does flying drones differ from the experience you have in school as an aerospace engineer?
9) Why do you choose to design drones yourself?
Shots :: Make a detailed list of shots you NEED for the video and shots that you WANT for the video. This list should include locations, b-roll shots, and the shots of the interviewee.
SHOTS NEEDED:
-Interviewees sitting down
-Subjects flying drones
-Subjects having conversations about drones
-Footage from the perspective of drone
-Subjects explaining things about the drones on location
-Drones flying through the air
SHOTS WANTED:
-Drones crashing
-Dealing with damages to the drones
-Building drones while explaining the process
-discussing personal impact of the drones
Anxieties and Obstacles :: Look through what you have written about so far and think through any obstacles or anxieties you have about your production plan. Write them down and brainstorm alternative plans.
I am fairly anxious that what I get will not be interesting enough. I think it will be interesting on a technical level of watching the drones zoom around and getting cool footage. However, I am nervous that the subject will not prove captivating enough. That it will seem dull and superficial. I think that the best work around for this will be to get the subjects to talk about more personal anecdotes about the drones. I also think I'll just have to keep the camera running as much as possible to capture things beneath the surface.
